Despite the fact that my design style seems to change with the tide, it’s not often that I actually purchase new decor. I keep myself from buying new decor by re-purposing items that I’ve had for years. In fact, have two closets full of nothing but “props” for my impulsive style changes. These closets are packed with lamps, candles, vases, linens, throw pillows, and other various nick-knacks…each time I open those doors it’s like entering a new world of possibilities! I’ve owned today’s DIY Antique Crackle Candle Holders for years, in fact, I think I bought them for my first apartment…so needless to say, they were due for a change!
DIY Antique Crackle Candle Holders [tutorial]
MATERIALS
- Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint, in Refreshing & Vintage
- Americana Decor Crackle Medium
- Americana Decor Ultra Matte Varnish
- two paint brushes (one for paint, one for crackle)
METHOD
Here’s how my old candle holders looked before the transformation…
First, I applied a thin coat of the color Vintage…
After the first coat was dry (about a half hour later), I applied a thin coat of the crackle medium…
After the crackle medium was dry (another half hour later), I applied a coat of Refreshing over the candle sticks…
The crackle finish happens so quickly! It was almost cracking as I was painting the top coat! Here’s how the candle sticks looked just 5 minutes after the top coat of refreshing…
Finally, I sealed the candle holders with Americana’s Ultra Matte Varnish, I wanted to keep that antique, aged look by using a matte top coat. Check out the finished product!
My newly revived candle holders are the perfect, fun pop of color in my super white kitchen!
