Transformed: Shabby Chic Console Table

shabby chic console after 2

On another flea market expedition, I scored this sad looking console table for $40.  Before purchasing, I checked out the quality of my “pick” and found that it was actually pretty good quality oak, and in great condition–SOLD!  This poor table had been written off due to someone’s failed attempt at giving it a faux marble finish…in blue…need I say more?  Here it is hours after my purchase; ready and waiting to be revived!

I decided that this table was destined to become a creamy shabby chic console/sideboard.  Oh yeah, and with polka dot knobs too.  Why you ask?  This console had a happy vibe about it, and curves in all the right places.

I got right to work, removed the knobs, taped off the hinges, and gave the whole piece a light sanding.  For the paint color, I decided to use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White.  Any type of enamel paint will work too; though in my opinion, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is the best option for DIY furniture refinishing.  These paints go right over almost any surface {stained, painted or polyurethaned wood, metals, glass etc}, and they produce the most beautiful, even finish.  After applying the paint, I used steel wool to give it a lightly distressed look.  My last step was to rub Annie Sloan clear wax on the table for protection and a very light {almost matte} shine.

Here is the shabby chic console table fulfilling its new destiny!

One more before & after, plus an update-a very happy lady looking to furnish a country cottage (almost three hours away!) purchased this table just 3 days after these pictures were taken 🙂

  1. Jordon, I just love this piece and in fact have one in my house as well. I did not need to redo it as I loved how it looked when I found it. This was turned into a gorgeous piece of furniture. The polka dots add a touch of whimsy. Off to the rest of your site.

  2. I am getting ready to paint an oak table with the Annie Sloan chalk paint. I am finding it hard to believe I can paint with out sanding, etc. What do you recommend to protect the table top? I really love your “stuff”! I have been inspired!

    1. Gigi,

How exciting, I just love a good transformation =) You can definitely paint over the table without sanding it, as long as the current finish is even, that’s the beauty of chalk paint! To protect the table top you should use the wax finish also provided by Annie Sloan. Usually, a piece will take 2-3 coats of wax (depending on how much use the piece gets).

I’d love to see the before and after, please feel free to share in Picklee “your picks” when you’re done!

      Jordan

  4. Hi Jordan,

I’m crushing on this console and your restoration of it. I’d like to find one like it. Do you or anyone else who’s reading know how to describe this console in searching for one like it?

    Thanks,

    Kim
